Art Tips: Painting a Still Life III

Start to develop the lights and darks on the vase.  For the whites use less ultramarine blue.  For darks use titanium white, ultramarine blue plus a small amount of burnt umber and yellow ochre.  This allows for the background to be reflected in the shadow.  As the vase is reflective, your colours are not blended flat but can be left slightly uneven to display this.  The blue on the vase is as before but with more light and dark variation.

Plums: Using some titanium white, winsor blue add in some lights on the plums.  Graduate a little with some winsor blue and permanent rose.  Once again these are slightly rough to allow for their reflective qualities.

Tablecloth:  Develop lights and medium areas with winsor blue and titanium white.  Use less white for medium areas.  Apply briskly to create a rugged feeling on the material.

Tablecloth on right: Using white with burnt umber and ultramarine blue build up lights and darks.

Background colours as before but with more light added.

With all of the above don't fill in all the spaces.  Leave some of the previous colours coming through.  This allows for a more lively and interesting painting.

We will continue and finish next week.
