Fig 3. Having removed the original guidlelines I now draw out lightly the spaces occupied by shadow. This allows me to understand where the shadows are placed. Through general shading of light, medium and dark I can start to convey weight and volume. Use this basic technique even if you intend to paint the objects as it will give you a greater understanding of the object and the more you understand the easier it is for you to paint.
